Book Suggestion: The Handmaid's Tale

Book Suggestion: The Handmaid's Tale

You guys, wow.

Over the weekend, I read The Handmaid's Tale. I know it's a popular item right now because of the Hulu release (which I haven't watched), but this book is wonderfully good. I stayed up way too late three nights in a row because I simply did not want to put it down. It's beautiful.

Now, don't get all hung up on what you think this book is saying about men, women, or anyone else for that matter, and in turn, miss the whole perspective that the book offers to you. That's just silly. I'm not  trying to convince you that men stink or about any specific issue for that matter (I happen to love all people, including men), but it sure challenges your ideas of freedom and what that really means.

It is indeed a fitting time to talk about freedom (seeing how we just celebrated Independence Day.) I am someone who is very proud of the country that I get to live in, and I want that to be very clear. I know I've said this before but we have to take our freedom with much more seriousness, refusing to assume that people will always have our best interest at heart. Don't get me wrong, I am not one of the conspiracy theorists, but this book did inspire in me to not only be active, but it also to take a deeper look at how women (and other groups) are treated and consider the repercussions of passivity. I do think that all people, men and women, have a responsibility to care and to hear about what other groups are saying about their experience. We need to look at our behavior with scrutiny to maybe understand why we make choices we make, why things are the way they are, then try to be better.

Do me a favor: Read the book and share your thoughts. I would love to have a conversation about this book with some of you lovely people. Go into it with an open mind, and don't assume that the writer is saying that the opposite of what's happening is true or that another specific detail is being condoned. Listen for the message and what it can teach you. I truly believe if you go in with that approach, you'll hear something pretty provoking and inspiring.

(I'm sorry I didn't actually go into much detail about the book. I despise to know any details in advance about books, movies, etc. I don't wanna ruin anything for you.)

Side note: If you click the link above or here, it will take you to the Amazon link. And yes, purchasing the book by clicking that link does give me a kickback.

Lots of love, loves!
